AVS/Express
Avs/Express is an extremely powerful
object-oriented, visual development tool enabling users to build re-usable
application components and sophisticated applications for image analysis
and visualisation. It operates on a modular design with each module performing a
particular image analysis or image visualisation function. Users can build their
own network of modules, tailored to a particular set of required image analysis operations.

Molecular Dynamics ImageSpace
Molecular Dynamics ImageSpace provides
a rich set of poweful tools to display and analyse confocal images, produced

Image Tool
ImageTool is a public domain image processing and analysis program
for Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT. Less powerful than AVS, it is
nonetheless capable of executing a broad
range of image analysis functions such as counting, sizing as well providing
statistical and real world dimensional measurements. Its open architecture
allows for a variety of plugins for tailoring the program to the user's

ImagePro
Image Pro provides analytical image
processing capabilities for black and write, gray scale and 24 bit colour
images. It includes a full range of counting, sizing, colour and grayscale
pixel segmentation, as well as statistical and image enhancements tools.
Image pro is suitable for any research and industrial application where

NIH-Image
NIH Image is a user-friendly public
domain image processing and analysis program for the Macintosh. It can
acquire, display, edit, enhance, analyze, print, and animate images. The
program can also do contrast enhancement, density profiling, smoothing,
sharpening, edge detection, median filtering, and spatial convolution.

Software for Image Acquisition, Manipulation and Multimedia Production
Image Acquisition software plugins
The IAAF has a set of TWAIN interface plugins that enable the scanning
of images. Twain interface plugins are
supported by several software packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Painter
4. Magicscan allows image acquisition from a flatbed scanner, Sprintscan
supports image acquisition from 35 mm slides and Easyscan allows
image acquisition with the LEAF Microlumina camera for obtaining images
from the Leica DM RBE microscope. The Orbis 16 software package is designed
for the Spectrasource Orbis 16 low-light camera for taking long exposures
of low-light fluorescent microscope slides.
Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop allows the creation of
original artwork and prepares professional-quality separations and electronic
output. Photoshop also enables the user to correct color, retouch and composite
scanned images and offers a range of painting and selection tools, plus
multiple layers, special effects filters, and lighting effects. For more

Adobe Ilustrator
Adobe Illustrator allows for the
creation of vector-based images. It is a versatile design and illustration
package producing images that can be used in word-processing programs and
many other applications. Illustrator provides the tools for creating and
packaging images, making editorial spreads, brochures, video artwork, Web

Adobe Pagemaker
Adobe Pagemaker is a powerful and
versatile page layout program with exceptional typographic controls, page
design capabilities and a wide range of customization options. For more

PaintShop Pro
PaintShop Pro has a similar set
of functions as Photoshop and is quick for making web-publishable images,
buttons and icons. It is a very useful program for converting image file

Coreldraw 7 Package
The Coreldraw 7 package includes
PhotoPaint 7 has similar capabilities to Photoshop, specialising in manipulating and retouching photographic images.
CorelDream3D 7 is able to create 3D models of images, which can be exported to VRML.

Fractal design Painter
Fractal Design Painter is able to provide the user with the entire artist's traditional supplies, from
felt pens, charcoal and coloured pencils to watercolour and oils. Painter
also provides many powerful options to sharpen, soften and distort scanned
photographs or apply marbling. It also is able to do frame-by-frame animations
and integrates well with Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Director.

Macromedia Package
Extreme 3D is an excellent tool for fore rendering, modeling, and animating three-dimensional images. Extreme 3D supports a number of cross-platform 2D and 3D file formats for web-ready images. In 2D these include GIF89a, Progressive JPEG, PNG and XRes for the new shockwave imaging plugin. In 3D, Extreme 3D supports VRML 1 and 2 and Apple 3DMF.
XRes is a sophisticated program to manipulate images in high and low resolution. It is designed to operate with Director 6 to create powerful visualisations.
Soundforge XP is an extremely useful tool to produce and manipulate studio-quality digital sound files that can be incorporated in the Macromedia multimedia product.
